How Great Is Our God?

Omniscience. What does that word even mean? After all, we don’t hear it used very often. Perhaps it's because there really aren’t many other places that word can be used other than to describe God.
What does the Bible tell us about God’s omniscience? It says that. . .
God knew the end from the beginning:
Isaiah 46:10 ~Only I can tell you the future before it even happens. Everything I plan will come to pass, for I do whatever I wish.
He knows everything that happens:
Hebrews 4:13 ~Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.
His understanding is something that we can’t even comprehend:
Psalm 147:5 ~ How great is our Lord! His power is absolute! His understanding is beyond comprehension!
He knows our hearts and our motives:
Jeremiah 17:10 ~ But I, the Lord, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.
Nothing happens without Him knowing, we are never outside of His sight:
Matthew 10:29-30 ~What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered.
Another place we see the word omniscient used is to describe a narrator of a work of fiction. With this omniscience meaning “An all-knowing third-person narrator who is not a character in the story but has access to the thoughts, feelings, motivations, and actions of all characters, as well as full knowledge of the past, present, and future of the narrative world.”
God is even better than an omniscient narrator because not only does He know all and see all, but He has had an eternal plan for all of it from the beginning. And He’s right smack dab in the story with us! We may not be privy to the specifics all the time or be able to see exactly how we fit into the big picture. We may encounter difficulties and heartache and obstacles. However, God does and will give us enough wisdom and insight – when we look for it – so that we can take the next right step on our path and leave the rest up to Him (that’s called FAITH!). This is where we see the omnipotence of our great God. Because more than being “all knowing,” God is also in control - evidenced in the aforementioned scriptures. He is all powerful and able to do ALL that He desires to do. He is LORD and sovereign over us.
SOVEREIGN. What an amazing word. The Topical Bible says, "The sovereignty of the Lord is a central theme throughout the Bible, emphasizing God's supreme power and authority over all creation.” What does that mean for us? It means that we can rest in His ability to handle it all. God’s got this. He is not just a narrator or a disengaged king sitting on a royal throne. He sent Jesus to walk with us, teach us, suffer with us, and suffer FOR us, all to demonstrate a glimpse of His great love. Through Jesus’s blood, death, and resurrection, we now have the promised Holy Spirit who not only dwells with us, but IN us.
In God’s great story, He calls us to be part of the family business. In His omniscience and sovereignty, He surprisingly invites us to partner with the Trinity --Father, Son, and Holy Spirit -- in the high and holy act of reconciling the world unto himself. (2 Corinthinthians 5:19) Fortunately, we don’t have to carry this storyline ourselves or try to figure out how to make it work out on our own. We can trust His character and His love. He is faithful. He is our protector. And no matter how dark the night or rugged the journey, He is working all things for the good of those who love Him! (Romans 8:28)
Don't you love movies that show us the lives and storylines of several individuals who are seemingly unrelated? As the narrative progresses, we begin to see how each character’s story will dovetail and somehow affect the other. As Katy Nicole sings, “God is in this story, God is in the details.” Somehow, He is masterfully and lovingly weaving all the threads of our lives together into a glorious work of art.
Whatever things you are worrying about or carrying today (because aren’t we always carrying something?) I am praying that you would be able to surrender it into the capable hands of our Omniscient, Sovereign God!
